Bloomberg recently announced that Apple will join the OpenAI board of directors and will be on the board due to Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI. However, according to the latest news from the Financial Times, Apple and Microsoft will relinquish their observer seats due to regulatory reviews.
Both companies will now attend stakeholder meetings instead of sitting on the OpenAI board of directors. According to The Verge, OpenAI has confirmed this change. OpenAI spokesperson Steve Sharpe expressed gratitude to Microsoft for its confidence in the management and company, stating, “We are grateful to Microsoft for expressing confidence in the management and company and eagerly look forward to continuing our successful partnership,” and continued: “Under the leadership of CFO Sarah Friar, we are developing a new approach to inform and engage with important strategic partners like Microsoft and Apple, as well as investors like Thrive Capital and Khosla Ventures.”
Along with these changes, OpenAI will host regular stakeholder meetings to share developments and foster stronger collaboration in safety and security. Microsoft and Apple are proceeding cautiously due to regulatory reviews in the UK, EU, and the US. UK regulators initiated reviews regarding Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI towards the end of last year. While EU regulators scrutinize the partnership and other Big Tech deals, the FTC is investigating investments made by Microsoft, Amazon, and Google in OpenAI and Anthropic.
