According to U.S. officials, Russia’s attempts to make significant territorial gains in Ukraine in the coming months are unlikely to succeed. The poorly trained Russian forces are facing challenges in breaking through reinforced Ukrainian defenses, which are now equipped with Western munitions.

In the spring and early summer, Russian troops aimed to seize territory outside Kharkiv and escalate the conflict in eastern Ukraine following their capture of Avdiivka. Despite inflicting thousands of casualties, Russia has made minimal progress in gaining new territory, highlighting a shift in the dynamics of the war.

While Russian forces continue to exert pressure, their incremental advances have been hindered by the resilient Ukrainian defense lines. This development marks a significant setback for Moscow, which had seen favorable progress in recent months.

Although Ukraine is bracing for challenging months ahead, the upcoming NATO summit in Washington is expected to demonstrate the success of efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Michael Kofman, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, noted that while Ukrainian forces are under strain, a major Russian breakthrough is now deemed unlikely.

During the summit, allied leaders are set to pledge additional funding for Ukraine, unveil plans for coordinated weapons deliveries, and reaffirm the commitment to eventually grant Kyiv full ally status within the alliance.
