Soccer icon Lionel Messi caused a stir in the cryptocurrency world by promoting the Solana-based meme coin WATER on his Instagram story. The post featured a playful image of the token’s mascot, a cartoon glass of water perched on Messi’s shoulder, along with a link to the project’s Instagram page. This endorsement led to a remarkable 350% surge in the token’s price within just two hours.

The value of WATER skyrocketed from $0.00032 to $0.00146 following Messi’s post, marking a substantial 356% increase. Although the price slightly retreated afterward, the token still maintained a significant rise, currently standing at slightly over $0.001. As per CoinMarketCap data, WATER has a market capitalization of approximately $94 million and a 24-hour trading volume just under $40 million.

The project’s official website states that WATER aims to make a positive impact on the real world through charitable initiatives, although the specifics of these efforts remain undisclosed. Notably, the token is listed on Bitget among other exchanges, potentially explaining Messi’s endorsement, given his partnership with Bitget since October 2022. Unfortunately, Messi’s media team could not be reached for comment.

Several other well-known figures, such as media personality Caitlyn Jenner and rapper Iggy Azalea, have previously capitalized on meme coin trends on the Solana blockchain. However, these actions have often been met with skepticism, as critics accuse celebrities of exploiting their influence for financial gain at the expense of their fans.

Analyst @ericonomics expressed doubts about WATER, cautioning potential investors against falling for what he labeled as potential scams. In a tweet, he warned, “They will probably rug [pull] soon so make yourself a favor and don’t buy that sh*t.” He also highlighted previous instances where Messi had promoted questionable tokens, such as Leafty and Planet, both of which faced issues post-endorsement.

Following Messi’s endorsement, former Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho also appeared to promote the WATER project on Instagram, resulting in a minor uptick in the token’s value. However, like Messi, Ronaldinho could not be reached for further comment on the matter.
