Unsettling Incidents in Eastern Ukraine

Hours after a battle in eastern Ukraine in August, a wounded and unarmed Russian soldier made a desperate attempt to seek help from his captors, a unit of international volunteers led by an American. Caspar Grosse, a German medic in that unit, witnessed the soldier’s plea for medical attention in a mix of broken English and Russian as dusk settled over the battlefield.

As the team scrambled to find bandages, a shocking turn of events unfolded. Another soldier in the unit approached the injured Russian and callously fired his weapon into the soldier’s torso. Despite the initial shot, the soldier was still breathing. In a chilling moment, a second shot rang out as the soldier was shot in the head, ending his life.

This disturbing incident deeply affected Mr. Grosse, prompting him to voice his concerns to his commander. In a brave move, he chose to speak out about the unwarranted killings that continued to occur, despite the bonds of camaraderie among the soldiers involved.
