The Labour Party has traditionally been a stronghold for the majority of Britain’s Muslim voters. However, in recent elections, the party faced challenges due to its stance on the conflict in Gaza. As the election results unfolded, it became evident that Labour had lost support in areas with significant Muslim populations, with several of its traditional seats being won by candidates critical of its Gaza policy.

In the Leicester South constituency, independent candidate Shockat Adam Patel’s victory over Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth was seen as a protest against Labour’s position on Gaza. Patel emphasized this by declaring, “This is for Gaza,” during his victory speech. The loss of such seats highlighted the discontent among many British Muslims and other voters who sought a stronger condemnation of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and urged the government to pressure Israel for an immediate cease-fire with Hamas.

The decline in Labour’s support among Muslim communities was evident in the local elections held in May. This issue also played a role in Labour’s unexpected defeat in a special election earlier in the year. Despite the focus of the election campaign being mainly on domestic issues, experts noted that Labour’s stance on Gaza did influence some voters, particularly those who felt it contradicted the party’s historical commitment to anti-colonialism.

Professor Paul Whiteley from the University of Essex highlighted how the conflict in Gaza had resonated with Labour supporters, stating, “The war in Gaza clashes very clearly with the historic commitment by Labour to anti-colonialism. What’s happened now is that sympathy for the Palestinians has grown, and concerns about the behavior of Israel have grown in the party.”
