Rishi Sunak bid farewell to the nation in his final address as Britain’s prime minister on Friday. He expressed regret for his shortcomings, taking responsibility for the Conservative Party’s devastating election results while defending his economic achievements.

Addressing the country, Sunak stated, “To the nation, I apologize. I hear your frustrations and take full accountability for this defeat.”

The outgoing leader, accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty, delivered a brief yet dignified speech in Downing Street before proceeding to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to King Charles III.

The election outcome marked a significant political shift in Britain, marking the end of a 14-year Conservative rule. Sunak announced his decision to step down as the party leader once the formal succession process is finalized. Despite his resignation, he will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament after securing re-election in Yorkshire.

Critics blamed Sunak for calling the snap election prematurely, a move he acknowledged as a misstep. However, he defended his tenure, citing achievements such as reduced inflation, economic growth, and enhanced global reputation during his brief term as prime minister.

Expressing pride in his accomplishments, Sunak commended his successor, Keir Starmer, as a “decent and principled man whom I hold in high regard.” He extended well wishes to Starmer and his family for their future endeavors.

This address signified the conclusion of Sunak’s political journey, for the time being, a remarkable trajectory for the 44-year-old former hedge fund manager turned statesman. Elected to Parliament in 2015, he later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, providing significant financial support to combat the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In reflecting on his term, Sunak remarked, “Today is a challenging day amidst a series of challenges, yet I depart from this role with a deep sense of privilege to have served as your prime minister.”

He also shared a personal sentiment, noting his pride in being Britain’s first prime minister of Hindu faith. Sunak highlighted the nation’s inclusivity, where despite humble beginnings, he rose to the highest office and witnessed his daughters partake in Diwali celebrations at Downing Street.
