Hezbollah Claims Responsibility for Rocket Attacks on Israeli Military Bases

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group has claimed responsibility for firing more than 200 rockets at multiple Israeli military bases as a response to an airstrike that resulted in the killing of a senior commander. The Israeli military reported that “numerous projectiles and suspicious aerial targets” had entered its territory from Lebanon, with many being intercepted. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Hezbollah Commander

The Israeli military confirmed on Wednesday that it had eliminated Mohammad Naameh Nasser, who was in charge of one of Hezbollah’s three regional divisions in southern Lebanon. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched Katyusha and Falaq rockets with heavy warheads into northern Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. The group continued its attacks, including launching exploding drones into several bases.

Escalation of Conflict

This recent attack marks one of the most significant escalations in the ongoing conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border, amid heightened tensions in the region. The US and France are actively engaged in efforts to prevent further escalation into a broader conflict, concerned about potential regional spillover.

Potential for War

Israeli officials have stated that they may resort to war in Lebanon if diplomatic solutions fail. Hezbollah’s retaliation followed a meeting between a senior adviser to US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron’s Lebanon envoy in Paris.

Humanitarian Impact

The fighting has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border. In northern Israel, 16 soldiers and 11 civilians have lost their lives, while in Lebanon, over 450 individuals, including fighters and civilians, have been killed.

Israel’s Concerns

Israel views Hezbollah as its most immediate threat and estimates the group’s arsenal to include 150,000 rockets and missiles, including precision-guided ones. The 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah ended in a stalemate.
