Apple made a major change in the iPhone processors in 2022. The Pro and standard versions of iPhones now started to use different chips. While iPhone 14 Pro models use the A16 Bionic chip, the basic iPhone 14 models had the A15 Bionic chip.

Last year, Apple also took a different approach with the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models. However, it seems that things will change a bit in the iPhone 16 series. According to Apple’s claims, in 2024, they are expected to introduce two new chips, A18 and A18 Pro. According to the new information, standard versions of Apple iPhone 16 models will use the A18 chip.

Developer Nicolas Alvarez discovered the identifying codes of Apple’s new generation iPhone models. This discovery reveals that Apple plans to release four different iPhone 16 models this year. Moreover, the discovered codes indicate that the devices will use the same A series chips and notably have five different code names.

  • iPhone17,1
  • iPhone17,2
  • iPhone17,3
  • iPhone17,4
  • iPhone17,5

These identifiers show that the iPhone 16 models will have the same type of chip. Additionally, it is stated that the “17” part represents the new chip series. Looking at the iPhone 15 series, the following code names are found:

  • iPhone 15 – iPhone15,4
  • iPhone 15 Plus – iPhone15,5
  • iPhone 15 Pro – iPhone16,1
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max – iPhone16,2

These code names represent the A16 Bionic and A17 Pro chips. Although the reasons behind Apple’s decision to update the chip in the iPhone 16 are not clear, it is believed that the Apple Intelligence features it will offer in the new phones influenced this decision. Currently, to benefit from Apple Intelligence features, you need to own an iPhone 15 Pro/Max model or wait for the new iPhone 16 models.
