As the revered holy man concluded his teachings to a massive crowd of devoted followers, chaos erupted in a sprawling tent in northern India. Tens of thousands of mostly women were gathered, singing and dancing, but the mood turned dire as they tried to exit the stifling heat under the pavilion.

Pushing and shoving ensued, leading to a stampede that resulted in a tragic toll: at least 121 people lost their lives, with many more left injured. The victims, primarily from impoverished communities, faced a horrifying ordeal as bodies piled up in the muddy field and nearby ditch.

Search efforts by grieving families extended well into the night, spanning multiple hospitals in a desperate attempt to locate and identify their loved ones. At the Bagla Combined District Hospital, where 34 victims were brought, the scene was heart-wrenching.

Corridors lined with melting slabs of ice held the deceased, bearing visible signs of the stampede – mud clinging to hair, dried blood on skin. The floors were a mess of slush and mud from the shoes of distressed relatives, creating a somber atmosphere of loss and devastation.

Grim vigils took place outside the hospital, with families and friends mourning the tragic events that unfolded during what was meant to be a spiritual gathering of unity and devotion.
