Short International Flights in Electric Aircraft
Explore the future of air travel with short international flights using electric aircraft. Discover how sustainable aviation is revolutionizing the way we fly.
Travellers now have the opportunity to embark on a pioneering journey, taking short international flights in an electric aircraft from Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands. This innovative initiative is part of a two-month trial known as “The Electrifly project,” enabling emission-free travel between Maastricht, Liège, and Aachen (Merzbrück) airports. These eco-friendly flights cover distances ranging from 30 to 50 kilometres, primarily catering to business travellers during the initial phase.
According to Jonas van Stekelenburg, the electric aircraft offers a silent and emission-free flying experience, reflecting the collective aspiration for sustainable aviation. However, the current limitations of battery technology restrict baggage capacity, allowing only one passenger alongside the pilot with a total weight limit of 178 kilograms on board.
Maastricht Aachen Airport views this initiative as a significant stride towards sustainable travel, with pilot Tim Tomic emphasizing the aircraft’s environmental benefits. Tomic confirms the aircraft’s readiness for flight with a 95% charged battery, ensuring a smooth and eco-conscious journey.
Despite the promising advancements, concerns have been raised regarding the feasibility of expanding these flights to accommodate more passengers and longer distances. Geert Boosten, a former aviation instructor, highlights the logistical challenges associated with leisure travel using electric aircraft.
The ‘Electrifly project’ aims to gather valuable insights during the trial period in July and August, drawing parallels to the evolution of electric cars over the years. Stekelenburg notes the transformative potential of electric aviation, citing the rapid progress witnessed in the electric vehicle sector.
Given aviation’s significant contribution to climate change, experts advocate for electrification as a crucial step towards mitigating environmental impacts. A single flight from Maastricht Aachen Airport to Liège or Aachen via electric aircraft costs approximately 120 euros, offering a sustainable and futuristic travel option.
