UN General Assembly Adopts Resolutions on AI Development

The United Nations General Assembly recently approved two resolutions addressing the global development of artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on bridging the gap between wealthy and developing countries.

Chinese Resolution Supported by the US

A resolution sponsored by China, backed by the United States, calls for the establishment of a fair and inclusive business environment for AI design and development. The resolution emphasizes the importance of international cooperation, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer to support developing nations in AI advancement.

US Resolution on Data Protection and Human Rights

In March, a separate resolution introduced by the United States, co-sponsored by 123 countries including China, urged nations to ensure the protection of personal data, safeguard human rights, and monitor potential risks associated with AI deployment. This resolution garnered global support for promoting the safe and trustworthy development of AI for all nations.

Collaboration Between US and China

Both China and the United States agreed to each other’s non-binding resolutions, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing AI governance. Chinese UN Ambassador Fu Cong highlighted the UN’s pivotal role in AI governance and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the US and other nations on this critical issue with implications across various sectors.
