A powerful Category 4 hurricane, named Beryl, unleashed its wrath on the eastern Caribbean Islands, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm made a devastating landfall on Carriacou, a small island north of Grenada, causing widespread damage in just half an hour.

In a social media broadcast, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada described Carriacou as being “flattened” and expressed concerns about the neighboring island of Petite Martinique facing “extreme” damage as well.

The sheer force of Hurricane Beryl, the first of the season, wreaked havoc as winds exceeding 150 miles per hour tore through the region. The aftermath included snapped trees, extensive storm surge, and roofs ripped off buildings, painting a grim picture of the devastation.

With power outages across the islands and communication severely disrupted, officials faced challenges in assessing the full extent of the damage. Prime Minister Mitchell emphasized that a comprehensive evaluation would only be possible later in the day.

As reports trickled in from Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, signs of Beryl’s impact emerged. A police station lost its roof, and a hospital had to relocate patients to lower floors due to roof damage caused by the ferocious storm.

Prime Minister Mitchell vowed to visit Carriacou once conditions permitted, highlighting the urgent need to shift focus towards damage assessment, recovery, and stabilization efforts in the storm-ravaged areas.
