French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte were seen leaving voting booths on Sunday, as the National Rally party emerged victorious in the initial round of voting for the French National Assembly.

Early projections indicated that the National Rally party, known for its nationalist and anti-immigrant stance, secured around 34 percent of the vote. This marked a significant lead over President Macron’s centrist Renaissance party and its allies, who garnered about 21 percent. Meanwhile, a coalition of left-wing parties captured approximately 29 percent of the vote, as per the projections.

Although the exact number of parliamentary seats each party will obtain is yet to be determined, the National Rally party is poised to become a major force in the lower house following the runoff on July 7.

President Macron faced a major setback with this outcome, especially after the National Rally’s previous victory in the European Parliament election. Macron’s decision to hold the election just weeks before the Paris Olympics was surprising to many, including his own prime minister.

Next Steps for Macron and Challenges Ahead

Macron has called for a broad and unified democratic alliance to prevail in the second round of voting. However, forming stable coalitions has proven to be challenging for him.

Both France and the United States are confronting nationalist movements that could potentially disrupt their international commitments, leading to uncertain global implications.
