Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Group have entered a groundbreaking legal process regarding the use of artificial intelligence in music production. The lawsuit, which claims that artificial intelligence services such as Suno and Udio have infringed on copyrighted works ‘on a large scale,’ represents a significant development in the music industry.
This lawsuit was initiated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). RIAA emphasizes that artificial intelligence technology cannot be exempt from copyright laws, stating that the rules in this area need to be clarified. If the court finds the AI companies guilty, they may be required to pay compensation of up to $150,000 per work.
In the past, the music industry has faced similar technological transformations. Thirty years ago, lawsuits were filed against music sharing platforms on the internet, leading to the closure of platforms like Napster, but eventually, they adapted to digital music platforms.
In the near future, it is predicted that a new era will begin with the use of artificial intelligence in popular music production. AI-supported pop stars will be able to perform their concerts on virtual platforms and bring a new breath to the music industry.
