One of the deceased was identified as Keita Kurakami, a renowned rock climber and ambassador for Patagonia. Kurakami tragically lost consciousness during his ascent of Japan’s tallest peak on Wednesday and was later pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital, according to authorities and NHK.
The grim discovery of the three bodies occurred at approximately three-quarters of the way up the 12,400-foot mountain, near its crater but at varying locations, the local police disclosed on Wednesday.
