EU Accession Aspirations of Ukraine and Moldova
Explore the EU accession aspirations of Ukraine and Moldova, their journey towards European integration, challenges faced, and prospects ahead.
Two Eastern European countries, Ukraine and Moldova, have set their sights on becoming members of the European Union by the end of the decade. The EU has recently commenced negotiations with both nations, one of which finds itself in the midst of a conflict.
Application for EU Membership
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Kyiv promptly submitted its application for EU membership. Moldova, Ukraine’s neighbor, which has concerns regarding potential escalations from Moscow due to the situation in the Kremlin-controlled separatist region of Transnistria, swiftly followed suit with its own application. Both countries have been granted candidate member status in a political move aimed at providing support to the two nations in distress, and they are now engaged in the negotiation process.
Challenges Ahead
However, the path to full EU membership is fraught with challenges for Ukraine and Moldova, both of which are former Soviet republics. Significant reforms in various areas such as the economy and the judiciary are necessary prerequisites that need to be addressed.
Differing Perspectives
While Moldovan MP Eugeniu Sinchevici views EU accession as crucial for maintaining a democratic and free society, there are opposing voices in Moldovan politics that lean towards closer ties with Moscow. Nikita Romensky, a spokesperson for the youth department of the Socialist Party of Moldova, advocates for maintaining strong relationships with traditional partners in the East, such as Russia and Belarus.
Hopeful Prospects
For ordinary citizens like Olha Shyvchik, the potential accession to the EU holds promise. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful for a brighter future for her daughter in a civilized and developed European country. She acknowledges the reforms required for Ukraine to achieve EU membership and emphasizes the need for a gradual and steady progress towards a corruption-free society.
