As per the latest report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a staggering number of people in Sudan are facing the threat of starvation and death due to the ongoing civil war. The report indicates that over half of the country’s 48 million population, totaling at least 25.6 million individuals, are in a state of food crisis.

Among the most alarming statistics is that 8.5 million Sudanese are currently experiencing acute malnutrition and struggling to survive. Shockingly, 755,000 individuals are in a state of “catastrophe,” which essentially translates to famine conditions.

The dire situation is further exacerbated by the fact that approximately 14 areas in Sudan, including parts of the capital city Khartoum, are on the brink of famine. This data underscores the urgent need for immediate humanitarian intervention to prevent a large-scale disaster.

Edouard Rodier, the Europe director for the Norwegian Refugee Council, described the crisis as potentially the most severe of a generation, emphasizing the unprecedented scale of the unfolding tragedy. His recent visit to western Sudan painted a grim picture of the dire conditions faced by the population.

Comparisons with other regions facing food insecurity highlight the severity of the situation in Sudan. The number of individuals in catastrophic food insecurity in Sudan has risen dramatically since the last estimate in December, surpassing even the figures reported for Gaza, where 495,000 people are currently in a similar critical situation.
