Members of Bolivia’s military gathered outside the presidential palace on Wednesday, as reported by President Luis Arce on the social media platform X. The situation seemed to indicate a potential attempt by General Juan José Zúñiga to seize control of the government building.

General Zúñiga, accompanied by armed forces personnel, made a statement on the doorstep of the palace in La Paz, asserting that the Bolivian Army, air force, navy, and police force were all “mobilized.”

Meanwhile, a meeting of ministers was taking place inside the palace when the military presence became apparent. President Arce, a leftist leader and the chosen successor of former President Evo Morales, condemned the action, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy.

Former President Morales characterized the event as a “coup,” alerting the public to the deployment of personnel from the Armed Forces and tanks in Plaza Murillo. He called upon social movements in both rural and urban areas to stand up in defense of democracy.

Local media outlets had previously reported General Zúñiga’s recent dismissal from his position, with speculations linking it to comments he made regarding Mr. Morales.
