One method of generating clean electricity to combat climate change is making significant progress. A California utility recently reached a milestone by supporting the largest new geothermal power development in the US. This initiative aims to produce 400 megawatts of clean electricity from the Earth’s heat, which is sufficient to power approximately 400,000 homes.

The utility company, Southern California Edison, has committed to purchasing the electricity produced by Fervo Energy, a geothermal company based in Houston. Fervo Energy is currently drilling up to 125 wells in southwest Utah to harness geothermal energy.

By investing in clean electricity sources like geothermal power, there is a reduction in the reliance on traditional power plants that contribute to climate change.

Early geothermal plants, such as The Geysers in California, tapped into steam or hot water reservoirs near the Earth’s surface. Companies like Fervo Energy are pioneering innovative drilling methods, such as horizontal drilling in geothermal reservoirs, to unlock the vast potential of geothermal energy. While the United States is a leader in geothermal energy production, it still accounts for less than half a percent of the nation’s total electricity generation.
