Kenya was engulfed in chaos on Tuesday as clashes erupted between demonstrators and police officers in the streets. The violence escalated as protesters stormed the national Parliament building following the passage of a bill to increase taxes, leading to columns of thick smoke billowing out of the compound. Demonstrators, incensed by the tax hikes included in the finance bill, resorted to hurling rocks and blocking roads, effectively paralyzing Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

Shockwaves reverberated across the nation as images emerged of protesters breaching the Parliament gates. The confrontations resulted in over 30 protesters sustaining injuries, with at least five fatalities reported by various civic groups.

Nationwide Spread of Unrest

The unrest quickly spread beyond Nairobi, reaching other urban areas such as Nakuru, Mombasa, and Eldoret. Kenya, burdened by a significant debt load, contends that tax increases are necessary. However, many Kenyans argue that they cannot bear the proposed hikes on essential imported goods like eggs, onions, and cooking oil.
