Slovakia’s Accusations Against Former Government

The sitting government of Slovakia is busy filing criminal complaints against its predecessors in office over their donation of fighter jets to Ukraine, claiming that the transfers went ahead illegally.

State Secretary of the Defence Ministry Igor Melicher has filed a total of four official reports against former Prime Minister Eduard Heger and his Minister of Defence Jaroslav Naď. Melicher stated, “These two gentlemen have been able to disarm Slovakia better than any enemy would.”

Legal Dispute Over MiG29 Fighter Jets

The dispute centers on 13 MiG29 fighter jets donated to the Ukrainian war effort before Slovakia’s last election. Slovak police rejected an earlier criminal complaint about the donated MiGs, but Melicher remains convinced that handing over the jets constitutes a crime.

The current government claims that the previous leadership did not have a constitutional mandate to send the jets to Ukraine because it had been defeated in a no-confidence motion before the decision was made.

Political Tension in Slovakia

The accusations come amid severe political tension in Slovakia. Former Prime Minister Robert Fico, a pro-Russian populist, remains a divisive figure. His government faced criticism for cracking down on independent media, leading to protests from citizens concerned about restrictions on free speech and political opposition.

‘The proof is in the paperwork’

The transfer of the fighter jets went ahead without parliamentary approval, with the former government claiming it was not necessary for purely military purposes. However, the current government disputes this and alleges that the decision was made without proper authorization.

Melicher believes that a lack of countersignature on documents he retrieved from the Ministry of Defence is evidence of wrongdoing.

The real jet set

With Ukraine seeking to bolster its defense against Russia, countries like the United States, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Norway have donated modern warplanes, including F-16s, to Ukraine.

The F-16s, with their longer range and advanced capabilities, are expected to enhance Ukraine’s air power significantly. Ukrainian pilots and ground crews have undergone extensive training to operate these aircraft effectively.

While other initiatives to support Ukraine’s air force, such as the delivery of Sweden’s Gripen jet, have been paused to prioritize the F-16s, the contribution of fighter jets like the MiG29 from countries like Slovakia remains crucial for Ukraine’s defense strategy.
