Russia’s Covert Operations in Africa

For years, Russia covertly propped up authoritarian leaders, exploited natural resources, and fought extremists in various African countries. Operating through the shadowy Wagner group, a network of political advisers, entrepreneurs, and mercenaries, Russia maintained a level of secrecy regarding its involvement in Wagner’s activities.

Leadership and Evolution of Wagner Group

Wagner group, once led by Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, a close ally of President Vladimir V. Putin, faced internal turmoil leading to Prigozhin’s demise in a plane crash. Following this, Russia has taken control of Wagner’s assets and restructured them under the Africa Corps umbrella group, with the Ministry of Defense overseeing its mercenary arm in Africa.

Deployment of Africa Corps

  • Africa Corps sent a few hundred instructors to Burkina Faso in West Africa late last year, focusing on training local forces.
  • Approximately 100 instructors have been deployed in Niger to provide military training, a role previously held by the United States and European countries.
  • Following the deployment in Niger, the United States announced plans to withdraw about one thousand military personnel from the region.
