Woman Attacked by Wolves at Thoiry Zoo

A woman is in intensive care after a harrowing encounter with three wolves while jogging in an animal park near Paris, as reported by French media. The incident took place at the Thoiry zoo, located approximately 40km west of the French capital. The chief prosecutor in Versailles, Maryvonne Caillibotte, stated that the woman sustained bites on her neck, calf, and back during the attack, but her life is now out of immediate danger.

Zookeepers were alerted to the attack on Sunday afternoon by the cries of the 36-year-old victim. They swiftly intervened to free her from the wolves.

Christelle Bercheny, the president of Wow Safary Thoiry, mentioned that the victim had ventured into the “American reserve,” the primary safari area housing Mackenzie grey wolves, coyotes, bears, and a bison. This area is typically accessible only by car, raising questions about how the woman entered on foot.

An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to the attack. The park has temporarily closed off the safari zone for further examination.

The Thoiry zoo offers lodging near wolf and bear enclosures, with the accommodation area secured by electric fences and ditches, according to reports from France Info news site. It is believed that the woman and her family had stayed overnight in one of the safari-style lodges at the zoo.

As of the latest update, the three grey wolves involved in the incident remain within the safari zone, which will remain closed until mid-morning Monday for investigative purposes.
