The Mythical Journey to Mljet

According to Croatian folklore, the legendary Greek hero Odysseus found himself shipwrecked and held captive on the picturesque Croatian island of Mljet. Embracing this myth, a group of seven sailors, including myself, set out on an adventure to this enchanting destination in May.

Setting Sail on a Kufner Yacht

Our island-hopping voyage was aboard a magnificent 54-foot Kufner yacht, featuring four cozy guest cabins that could accommodate up to eight passengers. The allure of the open sea and the promise of exploring hidden gems along the Croatian coast beckoned us on this unforgettable journey.

A Seafaring Misadventure

Our maritime escapade encountered a minor setback when the motor on our yacht failed due to a clogged fuel filter. Amidst the temporary halt in our voyage, our captain, Ivan Ljubovic, light-heartedly reminded us of Odysseus’ seven-year sojourn on Mljet, suggesting that our two-night delay was a mere trifle in comparison.

The unexpected stop in a village adorned with ancient Roman ruins overlooking a turquoise bay offered us a delightful interlude amidst the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. While an operational engine is crucial for sailing, our impromptu stay allowed us to savor the serenity of the coastal village and immerse ourselves in its rich history.

A Budget-Friendly Seafaring Adventure

My decision to embark on this seafaring escapade was influenced by a serendipitous sale offered by the tour operator G Adventures during the Black Friday weekend. Despite the potential challenges of off-season weather and limited amenities, the allure of a seven-night island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik at a discounted rate of approximately $1,300 was too enticing to resist.

Prepared for the possibility of chilly weather and closed establishments, my cousin Kim and I eagerly embraced the spirit of adventure as we set sail from Split, eager to explore the hidden treasures of the Croatian coast on a budget-friendly voyage filled with unexpected delights.
