The European Union’s Digital Markets Act and Apple
The content discusses the European Union’s Digital Markets Act and Apple regarding the regulations of the EU on digital markets and Apple’s stance towards these new laws.
The European Union officially implemented the Digital Markets Act (DMA) at the end of 2022. The EU’s regulatory body, the European Commission, made a statement that Apple’s App Store rules violate the DMA.
Statements and Reviews by the European Commission
The European Commission stated that Apple’s App Store rules do not allow developers to sufficiently direct consumers to alternative ways to obtain applications for iOS devices. Additionally, it was emphasized that in a large part of the conditions that Apple offers to developers, it only allows redirection via ‘links’.
During the review process, Apple will be able to examine its documents and prepare a defense for the App Store rules. If the violation is confirmed, Apple could face a fine of up to 10% of its global revenue.
The European Commission has also launched another investigation to determine whether Apple’s iOS policies violate the DMA. The Commission will examine whether Apple’s requirements for establishing third-party app stores for iOS products, set in January, also violate the DMA.
