Two violent incidents in Dagestan, southern Russia, over the weekend have raised concerns about extremist violence within the country. The attacks, which took place in Makhachkala and Derbent, resulted in the brutal killing of at least 20 individuals and the destruction of religious buildings.

Details of the Attacks

Gunmen carried out coordinated assaults on synagogues and Orthodox churches, unleashing chaos and terror in the two cities located more than 70 miles apart. Disturbing videos circulating on social media captured the gunmen firing at civilians and vehicles on the streets.

Responsibility and Investigation

While the Russian authorities have labeled the attacks as acts of terrorism, the perpetrators behind the violence remain unidentified. No specific individual or group has claimed responsibility for the atrocities, leaving the motive shrouded in mystery.

The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a terrorism investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the attacks. In the wake of a previous terrorist incident in March near Moscow, U.S. intelligence agencies had warned of potential threats from an Islamic State faction. However, as of now, no conclusive assessment has been made regarding the perpetrators of the Dagestan shootings.
