A still from a video released by the Russian government yesterday shows officers after the attacks in Dagestan. At least 20 people were killed on Sunday in a seemingly coordinated assault in the Dagestan region of southern Russia. It was the deadliest attack in the area in 14 years.

Act of Terror

The Russian authorities have designated the attack as an act of terror, but the responsible party remains unknown. Gunmen targeted a police station, synagogues, and Orthodox churches, resulting in the deaths of 15 police officers and an Orthodox priest who was killed in his church.

Resurgence of Violence

The attack in Dagestan echoes the past violence in the Northern Caucasus region, fueled by a mix of Islamic fundamentalism and organized crime. The recent surge in violence threatens the peace achieved after President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to suppress such activities when he came to power in 1999.

Analysis: The assault on Sunday sheds light on the mounting challenges Russia faces amidst the war in Ukraine, straining its economy and security apparatus. In March, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack near Moscow, further highlighting the security concerns in the region.
