Two coordinated attacks by gunmen in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan resulted in the tragic loss of at least 15 law enforcement officers and four civilians, as confirmed by Russian investigators on Monday.

Armed with rifles and Molotov cocktails, the assailants targeted synagogues and Orthodox churches in two major cities of Dagestan, a region predominantly inhabited by Muslims along the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Among the victims was Nikolai Kotelnikov, a priest in Derbent, who lost his life in the violence. The attackers also set fire to a synagogue in the city, further escalating the chaos.

During the night of the attacks, the gunmen roamed freely, engaging in shooting incidents with law enforcement officers, according to reports from the region’s interior ministry. The violent rampage continued until five attackers were eventually neutralized by local officials.

While Russian investigators classified the incidents as acts of terrorism, the responsible party behind the attacks remains unclear, raising concerns about the motives and organizations involved.

In response to the tragic events, local authorities in Dagestan declared a three-day period of mourning for the victims. Families of the deceased will also receive special compensation as a gesture of support during this difficult time.
