Niclas Füllkrug arrived at the Adidas campus early, situated just outside the picturesque town of Herzogenaurach in Bavaria. The campus was set to host the German national team ahead of the European soccer championships. While the team’s arrival was scheduled for a Monday morning, Füllkrug, a forward on the team, surprised everyone by showing up on Sunday night.

An Eventful Train Ride

Füllkrug opted to travel the 300-mile distance from his home in Hanover to the Adidas campus via a high-speed train operated by Germany’s national railway carrier, Deutsche Bahn. Despite being a sponsor of the tournament and promoting its ecological efforts, Deutsche Bahn’s reputation for delays and cancellations preceded it. Lack of investment in infrastructure had made the train service unreliable.

Meeting High School Students

During his train journey, Füllkrug found himself surrounded by high school students on a class trip, leading to an unexpected Q&A session about his life as a national team player. The cramped conditions and extended travel time due to delays were far from ideal for an elite athlete preparing for a major tournament. Füllkrug’s experience highlighted the need for contingencies when relying on Deutsche Bahn.
