It has been a year since the mercenary chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, launched a daring armed rebellion in Russia, directly challenging the authority of President Vladimir Putin. The leader of the Kremlin-sponsored Wagner Group staged a takeover of a military headquarters in the south and set out on a daring march towards Moscow with the aim of ousting the Defence Ministry’s top brass.

For months leading up to the events of 2023, Prigozhin had been vocal about his discontent with the military leadership, accusing them of withholding essential ammunition needed for operations in Ukraine. His public outbursts on social media targeted then-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and General Staff chief General Valery Gerasimov, alleging incompetence and corruption within the military ranks.

The March of Justice

The tipping point for Prigozhin’s rebellion came when the Defence Ministry mandated that Wagner Group sign contracts with the regular military, prompting his bold move on June 23-24, 2023. His mercenaries swiftly seized control of the military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and began advancing towards Moscow in what he dubbed a “march of justice” to purge the leadership he deemed unfit. Several military aircraft were downed during the advance, resulting in casualties among Russian pilots and escalating tensions in the capital.

Putin, in a televised address, denounced Prigozhin’s actions as a betrayal and treason, pledging to deal decisively with those responsible. However, the rebellion took an unexpected turn when Prigozhin abruptly halted the march following an amnesty deal reportedly brokered by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. The mercenaries were given the option to relocate to Belarus, retire, or integrate into the Russian Defence Ministry.

Prigozhin later admitted that his uprising was fueled by anger amid the internal power struggle. Speculations arose that he sought to gain Putin’s support against the military establishment.

Prigozhin’s Tragic End

Exactly two months after the rebellion, tragedy struck as a private jet carrying Prigozhin and his inner circle crashed en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, claiming the lives of all passengers and crew. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, with preliminary U.S. intelligence suggesting foul play in the form of an intentional explosion on board.

The incident raised suspicions of an assassination plot, given the history of targeted killings of Putin’s adversaries. While Western officials hinted at Kremlin involvement, Russian authorities vehemently denied any connection to the crash, dismissing allegations as baseless propaganda.

Prigozhin was laid to rest in a private ceremony in his hometown of St. Petersburg, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter that shook the foundations of Russian power dynamics.
