Gunmen launched a coordinated attack at a synagogue and an Orthodox church in Derbent, Dagestan, as reported by Russian news agencies. In a separate incident, a police post in the capital city of Dagestan, Makhachkala, was also targeted. Reports indicate that at least two police officers were killed in the attacks, with six people sustaining injuries.

Unverified videos circulating online depict the synagogue engulfed in flames while individuals are seen firing multiple shots. Sergey Melikov, the head of the Dagestan Republic, confirmed the incidents, stating that Dagestan police officers confronted the attackers. Melikov noted, “Dagestan police officers stood in their way. According to preliminary information, there are victims among them.”

The identities of the assailants have yet to be determined. Derbent, known for its ancient Jewish community in the primarily Muslim North Caucasus region, was the site of the attacks. The situation is evolving, and updates will follow.
