Karim al-Masri, an 18-year-old student in Gaza, was unable to take his final exams due to the ongoing war. Instead of preparing for graduation, he spent his time selling ice to support his family. The war has caused nearly 39,000 students in Gaza to miss their high school final examinations, leading to a significant impact on education in the region.
Devastation of Gaza’s Education System
The conflict has devastated Gaza’s education system, which was already struggling after previous wars and escalations. Approximately 625,000 children are currently missing out on education in Gaza, with schools closed since the war began in October. More than 76% of schools in Gaza require rebuilding or major rehabilitation after Israel’s offensive, with many schools being used as shelters for displaced families.
Karim al-Masri said that he aspired to study information technology at universities that have now been destroyed by Israeli bombardment. All 12 universities in Gaza have been severely damaged or destroyed due to the ongoing conflict, leaving many students like al-Masri uncertain about their future.
“I should have been studying and preparing for my final exams,” said Mr. al-Masri. “I’m spending my days working to provide for my family to cope with the situation.”
