Edmonton Oilers’ Stanley Cup Journey

Meeting with Mayor Amarjeet Sohi
During a recent visit to Edmonton to cover the Oilers’ journey to the Stanley Cup finals, I had the opportunity to meet with Amarjeet Sohi, the city’s mayor since 2021. Mr. Sohi has a diverse background that includes experiences as a taxi driver, a bus driver, a federal member of Parliament, and a minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
Our discussion touched on various topics, including the city’s nostalgia for the Oilers’ past successes, the vibrant bar and restaurant scene around the team’s arena, and the challenges faced by Edmonton’s downtown area.
Since the closure of department stores, shopping malls in Edmonton have struggled with empty storefronts. The downtown office towers are also awaiting a return of workers post-pandemic. Additionally, there is a visible homelessness issue in the city, with many individuals facing severe addiction and mental health challenges.
