During the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, a tragic event unfolded as at least 450 individuals lost their lives under the scorching sun while praying at sacred sites around the holy city of Mecca. The pilgrims, some of whom had saved their entire lives for this journey, endured extreme temperatures ranging from 108 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to numerous cases of individuals passing out and requiring urgent medical attention.

The hajj pilgrimage is a significant event on the Muslim calendar, with Mecca being the holiest city for Muslims. It is one of Islam’s five pillars, and all physically and financially capable Muslims are obligated to undertake this pilgrimage, spending days walking and residing in tents during their spiritual journey.

Indonesia has reported the highest number of deaths so far, with 199 casualties, followed by India with 98 reported deaths. While authorities have not confirmed heat as the sole cause of these fatalities, relatives of the missing and deceased individuals, as well as tour operators, have indicated that the extreme heat likely played a contributing role.

The death toll is expected to increase as official figures from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, a significant source of pilgrims, have not been released. Egypt has taken measures to establish crisis centers to manage distress calls and coordinate the government’s response, as families fear a substantial loss of lives with many individuals still reported as missing.
