Japan’s space agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), recently disclosed that they have been targeted by cyber attacks over the past year. However, officials have assured the public that no classified information has been compromised in these incidents.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, the chief cabinet secretary for JAXA, stated that they have taken immediate measures by shutting down some affected networks to prevent any potential leakage of information related to rockets, satellites, or national security. Additionally, Minister Minoru Kihara confirmed that there has been no impact on Japan’s national defense ministry.

These cyber attacks have coincided with Japan’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities as China’s military strength grows. Despite these challenges, JAXA has achieved significant milestones in its space program this year.

  • In January, JAXA successfully landed its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon on the lunar surface, marking Japan as the fifth country to achieve a precise lunar landing.
  • In February, the agency’s new flagship H3 rocket achieved a planned orbit for the first time after a failed initial flight in the previous year.
  • Furthermore, JAXA is preparing for a third H3 rocket launch scheduled for June 30, which will carry an advanced observation satellite into space.
