The Rise of A.I. Nationalism: A Global Perspective

Over the past year, we’ve traversed seven countries to report on a pressing global issue: the race for artificial intelligence supremacy. As A.I. technology advances at an unprecedented pace, nations around the world are increasingly anxious about falling behind. The stakes are high, as A.I. has the potential to transform the global economy, automate jobs, accelerate scientific innovation, and even redefine the nature of warfare.

World leaders are keenly aware that they must foster A.I. development within their own borders to harness its benefits. There is a palpable fear that without robust A.I. capabilities, countries will become reliant on foreign technologies, potentially jeopardizing their sovereignty and economic independence.

Consequently, the concept of A.I. nationalism is gaining traction—this ideology suggests that nations must cultivate their own technological advancements to protect their interests. In response, various countries have enacted new laws and regulations to stimulate local A.I. industries, forming strategic alliances to bolster their positions in this competitive landscape.

United States: Positioned as a frontrunner in the global A.I. race, the U.S. is leveraging trade policies to restrict China’s access to vital microchips essential for A.I. development.
France: The French government is actively supporting local startups, with President Macron recently praising a company dedicated to creating chatbots and other A.I. tools that cater to French and other non-English speaking populations.
Saudi Arabia: Under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom is investing billions in A.I. initiatives while forging partnerships with major tech corporations like Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft to establish itself as a significant A.I. hub.

“We must rise to the challenge of A.I., or risk losing control of our future,” cautioned a recent report by the French government, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The ChatGPT Catalyst

The competition for A.I. dominance can be traced back to a pivotal event in the world of gaming. In 2016, Google’s DeepMind achieved a landmark victory in the ancient board game Go, showcasing a significant leap in A.I.’s ability to emulate human-like thinking and strategy. This achievement did not go unnoticed by Chinese officials, who promptly allocated billions in funding and devised a comprehensive plan to position China as a global leader in A.I. technology. The Chinese government has since integrated A.I. into its extensive surveillance apparatus, giving the technology a distinctly authoritarian application.

However, the emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022 caught many of China’s leading tech firms off guard. The rapid advancement of this A.I. tool sparked a race among Chinese companies to innovate and catch up. Despite their efforts, development has been hindered by stringent censorship regulations and government oversight, posing significant challenges to their progress.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a preliminary report stating that a Tesla Semi electric truck in California required firefighters to use “50,000 gallons” (approximately 190,000 liters) of water to extinguish a roadside fire. Firefighting teams also deployed an aircraft to drop fire retardant on nearby areas as a precautionary measure to control the fire.

The accident occurred on August 19 at 3:13 AM local time on the I-80 highway east of Sacramento. The electric truck went off the road while navigating a curve, collided with a roadside boundary marker, and then struck a tree, coming to a stop. Fortunately, the driver was not injured in the accident; however, considering their health condition, they were taken to the hospital.

The Tesla Semi’s large 900 kWh battery caught fire upon impact, and toxic smoke began to spread during the fire. While the fire continued with temperatures reaching up to 538°C, firefighters worked intensively to cool the blaze with water. However, due to the fire’s effects, the vehicle continued to burn until late in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Tesla sent a technical expert to the scene regarding fire safety and high voltage hazards.

The highway reopened to traffic at 7:20 PM local time, 16 hours after the accident. The NTSB, as an organization that can only make recommendations and cannot enforce regulations, sent a team to the area for investigation purposes. This major accident raised several issues, including dangerously hot fires and toxic smoke, which will attract the attention of many international organizations.

The NTSB had previously stated in 2021 that fires in the batteries of electric vehicles pose serious risks to emergency response teams and that the guidelines provided by manufacturers for such fires are inadequate.

In contrast, this year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra has quite sharp corners, which has led to feedback from some users indicating discomfort while holding the device. According to leaks, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to be thinner and lighter compared to previous models. In August, rumors emerged that the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra would be lighter than its competitors, with a weight of under 221 grams.

Another image featured in IceUniverse’s post shows close-ups of the sides of both next year’s expected flagship phone and Samsung’s current flagship. In this image, the side of the Galaxy S25 Ultra appears flatter with rounded corners. While these changes may not create a major revolution, they will generally positively affect the feel of the phone in hand.

Looking at other rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, it is expected that the company will offer top-tier screen and camera upgrades next year. Additionally, there is a strong expectation that the satellite connection feature will also be introduced alongside the Galaxy S25.
